I think that's more of an argument for getting someone competent and experienced at teaching gun use to train you, instead of winging it on
the basis of a movie you saw.

The shooter needs to have control of the gun at all times. My favorite
was the guy whose gun backfired into his own stomach.

Dude whose pants fell down was based. He kept on mission, laying lead down on the target, even though his bits were in the wind.

Agreed that the shooter needs to have control. I wonder if many of
those people were even told about the recoil they would experience.
Though some of those weapons seemed designed to cause problems for the
shooter unless they were heavily trained before using the weapon.

I've only shot a handgun once, a .45, and even though I knew the
recoil was coming it surprised me how much of a lift the gun got from
that recoil. Enough that I would never chose that weapon if I were
    going to get a handgun.

Now that .50 cal looked like great fun, but only if I watching someone
else shoot it. If I tried it would be like that short comedian being
thrown back when the shot that gun.

One thing my wife told me shortly after we were married was that while
she hadn't been to the shooting range in 5 years her pistol licence
(Canada requires licences for handguns but not rifles) was still valid
... it's probably different in the US but that's something I expected
she would have told me before we married (though it wouldn't have
    changed my feelings about her).

I don't think her father had ever fired weapons but his two brothers
were both graduates of the Canadian Air Force Academy so presumably
they had. (One went to the Canadian National Research Council as an
electrical engineer, the other stayed career Air Force and retired as
    a Lt Colonel)
