This is sad. I just picked up their edition of _A Question of Navigation_
by Kevin Hearne thanks to a reference in this newsgroup. It's well-printed
and set, and clearly offset-printed.
I think a lot of small presses like this are being killed off by PoD since although the PoD print quality isn't as good, it's a whole lot more cost effective for runs under a couple thousand. I'd be curious where the breakeven point actually is. And, it means you don't need to keep books in stock and
pay tax on inventory year after year.
Yes, it's possible for a small press to take advantage of PoD themselves, but it's no easier than for the author to self-publish which does that much more
to reduce the benefit of the publisher to the author.
It's sad. But the basement operations printing chapbooks with hand-set type whose whole purpose for being is print quality, those will still stick around. --scott
