Star Wars' 50th Anniversary Rerelease Includes a Historic First ---------------------------------------------------------------
Star Wars will mark a historic first with its 50th anniversary
celebration. Disney and Lucasfilm will rerelease Star Wars:
Episode IV - A New Hope in theaters next year, along with a new
standalone movie starring Ryan Gosling. Both of these movies
will mark a major milestone for the franchise.
The original Star Wars movie and Gosling's Star Wars: Starfighter
will be presented in IMAX 70mm upon their theatrical release in
2017. This will mark the first time fans can experience the Star
Wars universe in this format on the big screen. The IMAX
screenings come as the format's popularity among moviegoers
surges.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope will be released in a newly
restored format. It will also feature the untouched theatrical
cut, giving fans a new perspective on the original movie. This
new version will be shown across a select number of IMAX 70mm
film locations.
It was first released in 1977 and was a massive hit that expanded
the Star Wars universe. It follows the story of Luke Skywalker,
who embarks on a journey with a Jedi Knight, Obi-Wan Kenobi, a
pilot, Han Solo, and two droids, R2-D2 and C-3PO, to save Princess
Leia from Darth Vader.
How Lucasfilm is marking Star Wars' 50th anniversary
Lucasfilm is marking Star Wars' 50th anniversary by releasing the
original movie and introducing a brand-new standalone feature.
During the anniversary weekend, Lucasfilm will release Star Wars: Starfighter.
In Starfighter, Ryan Gosling plays Kade Auberon. The standalone
movie's synopsis reads, "When a cynical rogue is confronted by his
mysterious past, he is hurled into a dangerous adventure across
the galaxy that puts him on a crash course with destiny."
This movie was shot with IMAX-certified cameras and will be
converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for release in a select number
of IMAX film locations. Shawn Levy directed the movie, and
Jonathan Tropper wrote it. The movie also stars Matt Smith, Mia
Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and
Amy Adams.
Levy also produced the movie alongside Kathleen Kennedy. Gosling
also served as executive producer. Other executive producers
include Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen.

Does Han still shoot first?
It's not clear in any of the news releases whether ti is actually the
1997 original or one of the later tweaked versions that is being
re-released.
The article above says "untouched theatrical cut", but also says
"Episode IV - A New Hope", so it seems unlikely it is the very original release, but will at best be the re-release with the sub-title added.
