Iconic Disney Movie Gets 4K Release Date for New Remaster
---------------------------------------------------------
One of Disney's most iconic movies of all time is getting a brand
new 4K remaster, with the release date revealed.
What iconic Disney movie is getting a 4K remaster?
The iconic 1951 film Alice in Wonderland returns this year with a
brand new 4K restoration, and is set to release on 4K Ultra HD
and Blu-ray on May 5, 2026.
The new release sees the film having been meticulously restored
and remastered in 4K Ultra HD by the Walt Disney Film Restoration
team. According to Disney, the restoration took place over the
course of nine months, and saw artists complete a digital scan of
the original nitrate Successive Exposure negatives of the film,
complete with a clean-up of the film.
The team also worked closely with Walt Disney Animation Studios
veteran Michael Giaimo to review every shot of the film.
The release of the remaster also includes a litany of bonus
features, including rare behind-the-scenes and archival material,
including reference footage with commentary by Alice herself,
voiced by Kathryn Beaumont, and companion shorts for the movie,
including Thru the Mirror starring Mickey Mouse, Alice's
Wonderland, various other deleted scenes, and two music videos for
"Beware the Jabberwock" and "If You'll Believe Me."
"The original animation artists' work on Alice in Wonderland is
stunning, and we're proud to present it with renewed clarity and
vibrancy," said Kevin Schaeffer, Director of Restoration & Library
Management. "This milestone restoration brings new depth and
dimension to the film's imaginative world, offering a vibrant
presentation for longtime fans and a new generation of audiences
alike."
Originally released in 1951, Alice in Wonderland is based on Lewis
Carroll's 1865 novel Through the Looking-Glass, and tells the story
of Alice, a young girl who falls down a rabbit hole and enters the
mysterious world of Wonderland. The movie originally failed at the
box office, but after being rereleased in 1974, became a massive
success.
The movie was directed by the trio of Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred
Jackson, and Hamilton Luske, and starred Kathryn Beaumont as Alice,
Jerry Colonna as the March Hare, Ed Wynn as the Mad Hatters, Richard
Haydn as the Caterpillar, Sterling Holloway as the Cheshire Cat,
Verna Felton as the Queen of Hearts, J. Pat O'Malley as Tweedledum
and Tweedledee, and Bill Thompson as the White Rabbit.
