From the point of view of the current Government versus the previous
Labour Government, the reckless borrow and spend they inherited has
improved. Make no mistake though - the current Government is spending
more than it earns and using increased debt to fund the difference.
The situation is getting better - that is not the issue - which is
that the turnaround is so slow. Steps can be taken now to get
spending (not including capital works) at the same level as current
income. National in particular are not doing this. They are
continuing to spend on day-to-day costs in the hope that increasing
commercial profits will generate increased tax receipts and increased wage-and-salaries, through bracket-creep if nothing else, will
generate tax income.
The next election is this year Mr Luxon. You cannot wait until 2032
or later to show you have completed a turnaround. You have to go into
the 2026 election demonstrating that we are on the way to economic
recovery and you simply cannot do that because we are not yet on that trajectory.

It seems from today's announcements from Minister Willis that National recognise this issue. Better late than never. Report progress before
election day - lets see a real reduction in the civil service payroll
count without degraded service delivery.
