    Come to think of it, I do have an idea. Although I have no idea if it's relevant to the OP or Pis today. In the bad old (pre Pi) days some
    boards just didn't have the required USB support. As in, a USB port
    would do just USB2 via the ehci_hcd driver which left out USB1 devices,
    like (at the time) typical mice and keyboards. Simple workaround was
    connecting a USB2 hub since those usually had support for both USB1&2.

    Yeah, don't know if mice or keyboards are USB1 or USB2 today either.
