• Question about applications

From Clement @ Leitersburg Lawn and Gard@3:633/10 to All on Friday, April 17, 2026 18:50:01
We are looking for an option similar to NextCloud for team
collaboration. We want to host this on our own on-premise server.
Nextcloud seems way too huge or bulky for our small business...

Are there any other open-source options especially for Debian?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    What makes you say that?

I'm curious why you say that.

I have a local installation of nextcloud, and I find it neither huge or
bulky. The base installation can be time consuming, with lots of fiddly
details to handle: firewalls, clients for mobile phones to install and
set up, etc.. A bit of familiarity with PHP won't hurt. But that's once
done and it's operating it chugs along.

Start out with the minimal set of applications, and add only as needed.
I use Calendar, Contacts, and Notes the most. There are clients for all
of those for iPhone and (I believe) Android.

Since you are on this list, I guess you plan to use Debian. Good.
Nextcloud is one of the very few applications I don't install from the
Debian package. Its native installer and update system work quite well.

There is a FOSS option "seafile", which seems like it does much the same as Nextcloud. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seafile

Does Seafile have notes like NextCloud?

One thing that I would like is the ability to share notes with team
members. Is that possible with Seafile?

I don't have any personal experience with Seafile or NextCloud. Being a one-man organization, it is not something I have ever needed myself.

The home page (https://www.seafile.com/en/home/) gives a whole list of features and functions, which includes "Docs" and "Wiki" features, which I guess would cover the ability to share notes with team members.

As others pointed out, maybe your impression of NextCloud is off.
I don't have any experience with it, but I did use OwnCloud back when it
was included in Debian. It was running on a BananaPi (1GB of RAM and
    two ARM Cortex A7 CPUs).

Another data point: NextCloud is supported by [FreedomBox](https://www.freedombox.org/), which is a Debian-based
system (included in Debian, see the `task-freedombox-blend` package, for instance) aimed at "home servers", which suggests that it should be
usable even when running on somewhat limited hardware.

I'll point out also that FreedomBox makes it easy to install NextCloud.

[ Actually, FreedomBox is so "Debian-based" that it normally supports
only services available in Debian's repositories. NextCloud is
a special case that was added exceptionally because of the enormous
    demand for it, AFAIU. ]

Are there any other open-source options especially for Debian?

I'd like to know as well, especially options that are included
in Debian, and even if they cover only a small part of the functionality
    of NextCloud.

The one service that comes to mind is SyncThing (also supported by
    FreedomBox, of course).

Nextcloud scales quite well in terms of storage. At home I run it on a RaspberryPi for the family and at work we have an instance for potentially around 80,000 people. However, I haven't tried the team collaboration
    features in either context.
