Prior to the release of the 2016 "Doom" game, Id wasn't sure what to
make of the fourth game in the franchise. As is probably common
knowledge, they were for a while considering making it something of a
"Call of Duty" clone before they relaunched with the more
combat-focused 'push-forward' mechanic that came to dominate the
    series since then.

And arguably this was the correct decision, given the later game's
critical and financial success. But looking at a collection of
Work-in-Progress animations (some new, some old), it does make me
wonder what that forgotten game might have looked like. Honestly, a
    part of me is intrigued.

Because while I absolutely love the lore and power-fantasy of playing
the implacable DoomGuy, I think there absolutely would have been room
in the franchise for playing as Joe Ordinary caught up in the middle
of a Hell-on-Earth scenario. Imps and Cacodemons and Barons of Hell
are just roadbumps to DoomGuy, and its undeniably fun to whiz about
them and take them apart with over-powered double-shotguns and
hell-crossbows, but seeing those same monsters from the vantage point
of a regular person? That might have been neat too.

I think id made the right decision with the main series, continuing
the tale as seen through DoomGuy's eyes. I just wish they also had
made a gaiden episode that portrayed the world as seen by other
    characters.

Then again, what do I know. I mostly play the new Doom games for the
    lore and narrative! ;-)
