think I'll keep at it for a while longer. Who knows? Maybe Humble will
start offering some games worth grabbing again. Let's find out!

A retro-themed turn-based RPG based on SNES-era JRPGs. For
what it is, the game doesn't look too bad... but I'm not a
fan of that genre.


* Tunic

An isometric action/adventure game featuring an anthropo-
morphic fox. Nicer graphics than the previous offering, but
still not anything I can get too excited about.


* Neon White

A single-player FPS aimed at speed-runners. Lots of first-
person platforming too, from what I can tell. Don't really care
for the visual style, and haven't any interest in speed-running.
I like to take my time and enjoy the level design.


* Police Simulator: Patrol Officers https://store.steampowered.com/app/997010/Police_Simulator_Patrol_Officers/
Yet-another-workplace-sim style of game; this time you're
a cop! But it's as janky as all the rest.


* Drop Duchy: Complete Edition https://store.steampowered.com/app/2525310/Drop_Duchy/
A cross between a puzzle game, top-down strategy, and a
rogue-like. Looks marginally interesting, although the
use of deck-building mechanics is usually an instant
turn-off.


* DiceFolk
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1996430/Dicefolk/
"A rogue-like deckbuilder". 'Nuff said.


* Our Adventurer Guild https://store.steampowered.com/app/2026000/Our_Adventurer_Guild/
Top-down turn-based RPG with gameplay similar to the "Fire
Emblem" games on the SNES. It's well reviewed, but --again--
just not anything I'm interested in.

You know, usually when I dislike a month's HumbleChoice selection,
still I often agonize over whether or not to skip the month. Even when
the majority of games aren't anything I like, still there's usually at
least one or two games ~~just~~ good enough that it makes me wonder,
"Should I pay for the games anyway?". After all, it does add eight new
games to The Number. I think this is the first month I ever looked at
a selection and said immediately, and with no remorse, "Nope, not this
time." (The one game I might be marginally interested in, "Drop Duchy"
is less than the price of the full bundle anyway. And even then, it
uses deck-building mechanics, so it's still not worth it even at the
reduced price).

So for the third month in a row, Humble disappoints with their
selection. Well, I guess I save myself some money anyway (most of
which I already spent on Steam Summer Sales purchases anyway ;-). I
guess we'll just have to wait and see what Humble offers next month.
Will they finally redeem themselves, or am I going to keep being
disappointed?

I wouldn't say always, but there's definitely a trend forming. I got a
lot of good games from them and usually the price-of-entry for the
bundle was less than buying the one single game anyway.

Over the years, thanks to HumbleChoice, I've added games like
"Galacitiv Civilizations II", "Dark Souls III", "Quantum Break",
"Civilization VI", "Mafia III", "Dead Rising 4", "Hitman 1 & 2",
"Project CARS 2", "Battletech", "Resident Evil: Village", "Shenmue 1,
II and III", "Bards Tale IV", "PC Building Simulator", the "Darksider"
games, "Yakuza 3 & 4", "Borderlands 3", "Mass Effect Legendary Edition trilogy", "Just Cause 4", "WH40K: Boltgun" and hundreds more to my
library. Some were awful, true, and many more were adequate... but on
the whole I am --or was-- generally satisfied with the selection.

It's only recently things have been getting bad. In part, I think,
this is because Humble has backed themselves into a corner. They've
already used most of the good games. They can't put them up again
because then people would be paying for duplicates. But there's only
so many games they can get that publishers are willing to sell for the
prices Humble is offering. It also doesn't help that, back when Humble
started, most publishers viewed their back-catalog as nearly
worthless, and were happy to see /any/ sales for games 10+ years old.
Nowadays, publishers price their older titles much higher, making it
more difficult for Humble to negotiate deals.

Still, understanding why Humble is struggling doesn't make it any
easier to recommend the service. It used to be a great way to get
games... but these days, not so much.

Even more so when there are much better competitors. If you can hold
your nose at the idea of giving them money, Amazon Prime gives you
more games (and movies, and free shipping) for a lower monthly cost.
Similarly, subscription services like Playstation of XBox or similarly
priced and you have a larger selection of games (albeit with even less ownership). Humble just isn't worth anymore.

I've heard a lot of good stuff about TUNIC.

I don't think its a terrible game. The reviews on Steam are quite
positive, after all. But it also doesn't seem to do anything
particularly novel or exciting. It's one of those 'good for what it
is' games, which I suppose is great for fans of the genre. But I'm not
included in that group, so it does little to attract me.
