And here I thought you were going to make some comments on the new
James Bond game that's in development.

(Apparently being made by the guys who did the Hitman series, but
otherwise something I know very little about).

My interest in Bond has greatly diminished though, especially since
the Daniel Craig era when they worked so hard to make him dark and
gritty. "My" Bond was always Roger Moore, and I always associate a
certain light-hearted silliness with the character. The modern, more
serious takes on the character have never resonated well with me. I've
no idea what the newest Bond will be like, but he's got a hard road
ahead of him to convince me to show interest in the franchise again...
    whether in cinema or video-games.

I saw Daniel Craig smile once in the modern more serious takes. He bends
down to tie his shoe and a girl gives him a look and he smiles about it.
Other than that, you may be right. Quite a difference from Pierce
Brosnan hanging upside down in the shitter kind of comical stuff.

I haven't seen anything about the game. (I tend not to look at
pre-release stuff about games anyway, because it's too often just hype
around stuff not supported by reality, and a James Bond game isn't
special enough for me to break that tendency). But I still have sore
feelings about previous Bond video-games ("Nightfire", "Quantum of
Solace", etc.) which were just such /average/ experiences that I
refuse to get excited about this new one.

Besides, it's not like I'm hurting for new games to play. My cup
runneth over, as they say. Just not with Bond games.

I rather liked Daniel Craig, he's the first one to show us the *real*
    Bond.

Not the fantasy of a gentleman spy who can be a bit of a bastard when necessary.

The cold blooded killer who will do whatever it takes to get the job
done for his country, including dying, and who can wear the mask of a
Gentleman to move in those circles.

The latter is the real bond, Connery, Moore, Lazenby, Dalton and Brosnan
all played the fantasy version who would not survive a day in real life.

How the fuck do you do the job when you tell everyone your name, and
every enemy spy agency knows what you look like? Most countries ARREST
SPIES, and literally every country on earth knows he is one.

Maybe that shit could have worked in the 60s and 70s, but with cameras everywhere and facial recognition, Bond gets outed before he can leave
    the airport and is arrested.

Hell Mission Impossible is more believable than that.

That's a funny statement because it makes me wonder if President Trump

You want realism, go with the likes of George Smiley.

Having been on the inside, Le Carr? knew his stuff, as did Fleming, but Fleming wrote
romanticized fantasy on purpose. His characters were not supposed to be anything like

    Ain't that the truth.

It's not that I actively dislike the other Bonds. But when I think of
the gentleman spy, it's Roger Moore that comes to mind, and all others
are imitations of that stereotype. The Bond played by Daniel Craig was interesting... it just didn't scream "James Bond" to me. It felt more
like a Bourne movie. Which is, you know, fine... but it just isn't
what I expect when I want Bond.

Then again, as has been already pointed out, the entire gentleman spy
shtick --never very realistic to begin with-- is pretty played out
anyway. The situation which made it even the least bit plausible is
long past. It's probably time to put Bond out to pasture.

I'm not against new ideas. Just don't cloak them as new Bond flicks.

I get that, but there comes a point at which is no longer romanticized
    but a complete mockery.

And romanticized, only from the white male 1960s misogyny viewpoint.

Bond is all hands, all the time, seducing and half the women flat out
    die.

Connery was the worst for this, and his last outing, Never say Never
again - the remake of Thunderball, he's an outright rapist.

Bad guys put him in machine to be killed, spa worker saves him. She's
worried about losing her job cause a customer almost got hurt.
He rewards her by blackmailing her into sex.

She saves his life, he rewards her with rape.

Not for Queen and Country, just for himself, while he should be out
    pursuing the bad guys.

    Romanticized hunh?
Only from the white, male, 1960s, misogynist, I can do whatever I like,
    sex is my right, viewpoint.

I always wondered if that was in the script or if Connery wanted it, so
he could make Bond repugnant and never, ever be asked to play the role
    again.

I mean did you ever meet a woman
who was actually named "Pussy Galore"?
