  • No sound

    I've been working on my daughters old RPC for her son, my grandson.
    Setting up various things for him and I have realised there is no sound
    out.

    I "upgraded" to RO6 then reverted back to 4.39 because it didn't like some files, complaining they were no longer supported.

    I have checked the "configure" setting and they look ok but I can't even
    hear the start-up bleep. I am sure there was sound before I upgraded.

    Any clues anyone?

    Do you have it configured for 8 bit sound when it has 16, or vice versa?
    Mk1 motherboards have 8 bit sound, mk2 have 16 bit. There was also a third party addon to upgrade to 16 bit, that would be a board towards the rear of
    the motherboard near the power supply.

    Try flipping the 8/16 setting to the opposite and see if it helps. It won't damage anything by trying it.

    Yes, I remember fitting a small board to one of my RPCs a long time ago,
    but looking into the case of this one, I can't see one. I don't know the
    age of this board and cannot easily see any marking. I did wonder about something like that because, Looking at the backup on my NAS, of the
    complete hard drive that I took before I did anything, I noticed in !Boot.!System.modules a module called SSound and dropping it onto !Edit I
    see,

    When I searched, it came up with a page from me from 2002 (!): https://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~theom/riscos/16bitsound/index.html

    that says there's a '16 bit' option in the sound section of !Configure. But the original upgrade manual (p39): https://chrisacorns.computinghistory.org.uk/docs/Acorn/Manuals/Acorn_16bitAudioCard_UG.pdf

    indicates there's also *Configure SoundSystem, either:

    *Configure SoundSystem 8bit
    or
    *Configure SoundSystem 16bit
    or
    *Configure SoundSystem 16bit oversampled

    where 'oversampled' means "automatically interpolate at sample rates <= 25
    kHz to improve sound output quality." Having it on might make a minor improvement to audio quality, but either way should work.

    There is indeed. Thank you Theo.
    How it got changed from 16 to 8 bit I cannot fathom but now it's back to
    16 it all seems to work.
