  • Lemmings

    One of the games I used to love back in the day was Lemmings. I would love
    my grandson to get the chance to enjoy it, but, although I've been trying
    on my old, now his RPC, I cannot get it to run; Even the copy that says
    "Risc PC Version" doesn't want to run.

    The RPC in question is running RO6, which generates error about a file
    type no longer being supported, which is ridiculous, but even resorting to
    RO 4.39 gets me nowhere. I see all sorts of comments on various forums
    that the "Archimedes preservation project" have the rights to release, at
    least one of the earlier versions as a free download. Try as I might, I
    cannot actually find "the Archimedes preservation project" or any link to
    the actual download.

    Does anyone out there have a working link?

    I am wondering if you would be better asking this question on the Stardot forums as they would probably know more about the issues.

    On newer RISCOS computers you could use ADFFS and run Lemmings that way.

    What is the file type that your computer says is no longer supported as I
    am surprised by that.

    Hi Stuart,

    You need to go to Jon Abbott's site:

    or use Packman and update the sources addresses to include where Jonathan released the games on.

    Some games will now run native 32bit but others will need ADFFS to be installed as well to run and that can be downloaded from Jonathan's site
    or via Packman.

    Didn't RISC OS 6 (or later versions of 4.x) tighten up on un-headered
    absolute files?

    Yup!

    In RISC OS 6.20 Configuration there's a Compatibility tool where you can
    tick accept on various problematic things.

    Thank you Doug. That is a revelation.

    I had come across some references to jspp when I was doing an initial
    search using Duckduckgo on my PC, but they all seemed to give
    404 errors

    So was I.

    It wasn't specific, just a general error box saying a file
    type no longer being supported

    Incidentally, the same error kept popping up when I was trying to copy
    Python 3 onto the machine.

    I've given up on RO6

    My grandson is 12 years old, attends Aston Grammar, and is keen on
    "coding".

    At the moment he is doing "Block coding" but will, in time, move on to
    Python apparently.

    He has already been awarded a "best in school" certificate for completing
    the Raspberry Pi foundation 2026 coding challenge, and another from the
    2025 UK Bebras computational thinking challenge, (also from the Raspberry
    Pi foundation)

    Not sure where Packman puts the files as I've never used it before,
    however I've added the given link to the sources and we'll see what happens

    It's 23.10 and time to leave till tomorrow now.
