    NeReO 1.3.2 (build 77)
    Package: org.openusenet.reader
    Android 13 (API 33)
    Device Xiaomi M2103K19K

I'm having a problem with authentication when I try to download groups, getting either error 483 or 481 depending on whether or not I check the SSL/TLS box.

"483 Connessione non cifrata: la password non viene inviata in chiaro.
Usa la porta ssl/tls di solito 563 oppure - solo se sai cosa fai abilita "consenti autneticazione non cifrata" in Manutenzione"

    "481 Autenticazione fallita"

I have been using Piao Hong 2.02 for a couple of years with Solani
without problem. I have an account with eternal-september too, but don't
use that with Piao Hong. Out of interest I tried it with NeReO and got
    the same authentication problem.

I used the default settings provided for Solani and eternal-september
("Choose from a known server"), just adding my username and password.

    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi, and welcome again... ;)
By the way... error messages are really in Italian? You ha the
possibility to switch all interface and also error messages in English!

    Anyway, after a quick investigation:
    You're not doing anything wrong.
The two errors are different problems.

    483 *SSL/TLS box unticked*
This is not a login failure. On port 119 the connection isn't
encrypted, so NeReO refuses to put your password on the network in the
clear. It's a deliberate safety rule. Ticking the SSL/TLS box is
    exactly the right response.

    481 (SSL/TLS box ticked)
Now the connection really is encrypted ? the port switches to 563 automatically ? and your username and password do reach the server. 481
    means the server rejected them.

*So the app is working in both cases*.
What's failing is the username or password as the server sees it.
And since the same Solani account has worked in Piao Hong for years,
the account itself is almost certainly fine.
Which points at: how the text is being typed on the phone.

    Worth checking, in this order:
Username, not e-mail address ? Eternal September wants the name you
    chose when you registered.
Capitalisation ? Android keyboards often capitalise the first letter on
their own. Type it, then look at it.
Trailing space ? pasting from a password manager very often adds one,
    and the server counts it.
So try Retyping the password by hand once, instead of pasting it.

One thing that is on us: "Choose from a known server" fills in port 119
with SSL off, even for servers that need an account. That's why you hit
483 on the very first try, before anything of yours was wrong. Noted.

If it still fails, *please send the NNTP log* (Maintenance ? NNTP log).
It shows the exact exchange with the password blanked out, and it will
tell us in one line whether your username left the phone in the shape
    you expected.

You can copy it directly here or, id You prefer, contact me by mail. My
mail si "despammed" but it works!

I'd left the language as "System default".
(In fact I try to leave /everything/ as the default as that usually
works! Once working I can change things one at a time to personal
settings, so if something suddenly goes wrong I can see what caused it).

I'd noticed the trailing space and was careful to delete it! By the way,
when you update NeReO again, it might be helpful to put an option to
reveal the password in the Password field so any incorrectly entered
    password can be seen easily.

Your Good idea it's going in. One caveat worth knowing: a trailing
space stays invisible even with the password revealed, and that's a
likely culprit here. So alongside the reveal button I'm adding a live character count under the field ? if you know your password is 11
characters and it says 12, you've found it in one second. Note the
field stays empty when you edit an existing server (the stored password
is encrypted); the reveal shows what you are typing now, not what was
    saved earlier.

You will find it in next 1.3.5 relelase...

The "invisible" space was the answer. Well spotted! It wasn't helped by
me using the keyboard cache to enter the password every time I tried, as
it was much easier to do that than retype it. But, of course, that
cached password has the invisible space too! Your idea of the character
    count is very good.

As you can see, NeReO 1.3.4 is working now.

Thanks for all your excellent help.

And a reveal password option in the 'Save config' dialogue to check what you enter?

(I've been re-saving my config for each version - just in case.)
