I've been using the Nextdoor app with a fake name for awhile now. When I originally signed up I used my real subdivision which has at least 6000
houses but no address as addresses were not required. We recently
had a weather disturbance and when I checked the 'Alerts' map in
Nextdoor I noticed for the first time that my house was CORRECTLY
PINPOINTED with a home symbol. It's on the map when using Nextdoor in a
browser also. Fortunately it's not available to others unless they sign
in as me and that requires a password so I think I'm still reasonably anonymous? But I wonder how Nextdoor figured me out?? I thought maybe
Google Maps who knows me well in all my names told on me but Nextdoor is
using Mapbox for its maps which is apparently independent (see below).
Mapbox requires a sign-in but I didn't bother since I wasn't all that curious... 8-O

Googles Android has location services. Combine with some other data (local time perhaps) and some pretty easy guesses can be made that a certain
location is likely to be your home one.

Does that mean you keep it on your PC but you still call it an app ?

Not sure what you mean here but this is how I access Nextdoor: Most of the
time I use the Firefox browser (whether on my Windows PC laptop,
Chromebook, or Android tablet toys) as it's extensions can get rid of much
of the Nextdoor clutter. I seldom post but do keep the Nextdoor app on some
of my Android stuff for that purpose as I've found that the Firefox browser
can mess up posting.

But in all cases, browser or app, my location was correctly shown on its map
even though having signed in using my fake name and NO address. Thus my
warning to others using fake names that they don't always work. I've not
stopped using Nextdoor as the map with my location is only available to me
so I'm still reasonably hidden from the nutcases. Just like Usenet... ;)
