    No. That device is effectively a smartcard too or at least exposes a smartcard interface.

    I'm talking of a Secure Digital card, in this case on the "micro" form
    factor and interface. These are storage devices with a different
    interface. Although I guess it should be technically possible for

    That's a separate concept to replace a physical Subscriber Identity
    Module. In turn, the device that offers a "physical eSIM", to be of any
    use, has to be compatible with the smartcard interface and the form
    factors used for SIMs.

    Oh, and to add, as it occurred to me this may be the root of the
    confusion: when one phone indicates it's Dual SIM with one slot
    alternatively accepting a ęSD card, it merely means the same slot/bay
    can carry either a nano-SIM *or* (xor) a ęSD card, not that the SIM uses
    the ęSD interface. The slot/space has both interfaces, but only one of
    the two can be used at a given time.

    Nope. Even with no problems I have always kept a local Google Drive backup.
    Likewise I haven't had a car accident in over 65 years and my house hasn't
    burned down in the 26 years I've been here but I still carry insurance.

    it. Unlikely to use them in my lifetime. I also have a Keepgo data SIM (Spanish provider which roams on T-Mobile, not the best coverage but sufficient) with 3.5GB, which is currently in the Pixel and I use it
    (rarely, mostly just to allow my family to track me) with my google
    voice phone number. Now my question:

    I would like to put the T-Mobile SIM in the Pixel and convert the Keepgo
    SIM to an e-SIM (which I'm pretty sure is possible); I'm also thinking
    about buying a Pixel 9 Pro for the tele camera capability. Can an e-SIM
    be transferred to a new phone? Keepgo is really good about email
    customer service, but I don't want to take a chance on accidentally
    triggering something irrevocable that I might not actually want.

    BTW, I recommend them highly. The data never expires and the cost is reasonable. My system is perfect for people who almost never use their
    phone as a phone and hate to waste money. (Ignore the fact that I get
    more free data if you sign up through me; apparently you get some too.)

    So, to reiterate: Can an e-SIM be transferred from phone to phone? ----------------

    Sigh! The point is that *anything* can die. You mentioned the phone
    dying. I mentioned the SD-card dying.

    If - as in the above scenario - your photos are on the SD-card and the SD-card dies, your photos are lost, unless you have backup. So whether
    or not the SD-card is encrypted is irrelevant and whether or not the
    phone is OK is also irrelevant.

    Bottom line: You need backup for (the Internal storage of) the phone
    *and* for the SD-card.
