My Samsung S24FE will not play the AVI video files that my trail camera
puts out. I'm told that VLC video player (for Android) will.
At the moment, I only need VLC to play the AVI videos. I'd like the videos that the phone already plays to be played with tne native app(s?).
Can this be done?

I'm not sure what that last sentence means. Are the 'videos that
the phone already plays' not played using the native
app?
On this Samsung tablet I have 'Video Player' installed by default,
though I generally use VLC. Google tells me that Samsung Video
Player supports AVI. But AVI is a container format so it probably
depends on what video/audio formats your camera AVI files
contain.
On Linux I would use ffprobe to find out. Or play one in VLC on a
desktop - that will display the codecs used. I don't know if you
could add codecs to the default Samsung player - I doubt it. You
could of course convert the file format.
I googled to find out what a 'trail camera' is and found it was
what, in the UK, we call a 'wildlife camera'. (I had assumed it
was a camera mounted on a trail bike, because I knew from
visiting US National Parks that a 'trail' is a path or track -
and sometimes a paved road! But I digress.) So I can see why you
might want to play the captured video out in the
field.
Google tells me that this AVI file is probably MJPEG. Also that
Samsung Video Player has 'notoriously limited' codec support,
from whiich I infer that many people have complained about this.

Depends on your sequence.
If you use a gallery app to select the video, and then use something
like "play with" be careful to select "VLC this time only" or similar wording. If you click "open always with VLC" then your other tool is out.

No. You need to recode the AVI videos to a format, what the native app understands. Usually MP4 or MKV.
