Why CD's instead of data files saved and used on various players?
The point is that youth are looking for inexpensive source of music that they can take anywhere on any device. I don't think they can do that without expensive longterm subsciptions from a streaming services, and those often limit transportability to other devices.
A couple of streaming services offer near-lossless quality, but that only works on very good hi-speed connections. And.. the subscription costs can be high.
Is the sound quality a lot better?
Authentic (pressed) CDs have lossless audio sources. Burned CDs can vary.
Thinking about it.. most CD's made these days would be burned from
music data files in the first place so..
Sure.. there might be a lot of discarded self-burned CDs out there. I've seen that myself in the CD collections at thriftshops (a personal copy of a CD would be inside the original CD case instead of the original CD)
Maybe independant music studios "burn" CDs for fans. But the article is about the music that we enjoyed in the 70s 80s 90s.
