Two Icelandair pilots who flew low over Iceland in their Boeing 757 in April have received a severe reprimand. The Icelandic aviation authority has temporarily revoked their licenses, meaning they are not allowed to sit in the cockpit for the time being.
An investigation into the incident, in which a flight was made low over Vestmannaeyjar Airport without permission during a scheduled flight, is still ongoing. This happened because the captain wanted to make his last flight before his retirement extra special.
The captain is banned from flying for two years, the co-pilot for one year. For the former, this appears to have few consequences. Although Icelandair was not informed in advance of the planned deviation from the normal flight altitude and route, the aviation authority wants to clarify the company's role in the whole affair.
