Affiliated Clubs Presidents' Webinar Draws Strong National Participation

The Wireless Institute of Australia's second Affiliated Clubs Presidents' Webinar for 2026 was held on Sunday 12 July, attracting a peak attendance of around 40 participants from affiliated clubs across Australia. These webinars continue to provide an important opportunity for club leaders to hear
directly from the WIA Board, exchange ideas and discuss practical ways to strengthen amateur radio at the grassroots level.


The meeting covered a broad range of topics including a very positive ACMA regulatory update, significant progress on the Radio and Electronics School
and WIA educational partnership, the WIA membership hardship applications, a report from the recent NZART AGM, the development of the WIA 5 MHz Land
Mobile Usage policy for affiliated emergency communications and WICEN groups and the continuing expansion of support services for affiliated clubs.


There was a reminder that the WIA Grants Program also remains open, and clubs were encouraged to take advantage of the funding opportunities available.


There was an outline of the Affiliated Clubs support program with work progressing on partnering with an organisation who specialises in supporting Associations through the provision of a comprehensive resource library
covering governance, constitutions, model rules, policies, finance,
membership systems and ACNC compliance. The emphasis is on a practical knowledge base for clubs and this will involve the establishment of a Discord server for affiliated club executives as a way of encouraging collaboration
and sharing ideas between club leadership teams and this is currently
underway.


Presidents also received updates on several important WIA initiatives, including the continuing redevelopment of the VK Callbook, Distance Records
and Repeater and Beacon Register, along with new dashboard capabilities. The Board acknowledged the outstanding work being undertaken by Hillary (VK2AZ)
and Tim (VK2XAX) on this project.


Other topics included progress on making the Foundation Licence Manual available as a PDF while continuing to offer printed copies via
print-on-demand services, the release of the new WIA publicity brochures, and the incorporation of the remarkable project by VK6UU to digitise AR Magazine archives dating back to 1933 into the new WIA Website.


The next Affiliated Clubs Presidents' Webinars will be held on 20 September
and 6 December, continuing the WIA's commitment to regular communication and stronger support for Australia's amateur radio clubs.

For those beginning to explore the technologies found in radio
communications, you might like to get to know about that widely used
component known as the operational amplifier, or op-amp for short. Author

circuits.


Speaking of circuits and circuitry, we have Part 3 of Lou Destefanos
Foundation class transceiver project for 80 and 40 metres. In this part, Lou goes into the details of the VFO and the two front panel displays.

The IARU Region 1 Conference is held every three years and the next is in September and will be hosted by the Austrian member society VSV, which is
also celebrating its centenary.


Reports and proposals on a wide range of amateur radio topics are available from the conference website. The scope includes the more regular topics such
as band plans, spectrum matters, EMC, and youth.


This particular event will also consider updates for amateur radio
development, operating, and organisational matters.

MALAYSIA

The 450 MHz Alliance reports that the use of 450 MHz technologies continues
to grow worldwide in utility networks. As utilities continue their efforts towards digital transformation, reliable and resilient communications
networks have become increasingly important to support mission-critical operations and future smart grid initiatives.


In Malaysia, the deployment of a dedicated 450 MHz Private LTE (pLTE) network marks a significant milestone in strengthening utility communications infrastructure. Designed to support secure and reliable connectivity across geographically dispersed environments, the network is expected to play a key role in enabling digital utility operations and supporting future IIoT applications.


One of the key advantages of the 450 MHz spectrum is its superior propagation capability compared to higher frequency bands. The lower frequency enables wider coverage, improved penetration through obstacles, and reduced infrastructure requirements, making it particularly suitable for utility and critical infrastructure deployments covering large geographical areas.


The Malaysian deployment is intended to support a variety of utility use
cases, including smart grid communications, remote asset monitoring, operational workforce connectivity and future data-driven applications that require reliable wide-area network coverage.

Scientists at the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology
(NIST) are developing a remarkable new type of magnetic field sensor that
uses tiny imperfections inside diamonds to measure magnetic fields with extraordinary precision. These "nitrogen-vacancy" or NV centres are created
by replacing a carbon atom in a diamond with a nitrogen atom and leaving a neighbouring carbon atom missing. When green laser light and carefully controlled microwaves are applied, the defect glows red in a way that changes according to the strength and direction of the surrounding magnetic field.


By measuring these tiny changes, the sensor can determine magnetic
fields with incredible accuracy.

the various aircraft tracking systems around the world.

ROCKY MOUNTAIN HIGH - IT'S TO COLORADO

Were all used to satellite navigation systems such as GPS or GLONASS, sheer magic in which the combination of a set of reference transmitters and super-accurate timing information can be used to calculate a position to an astounding precision.


They did have land based predecessors such as LORAN and Decca Navigator which worked in a similar fashion but with fixed land-based reference transmitters.

ENTER TERRA

Terra is an attempt to do the same thing without a network of dedicated transmitters, instead using FM broadcast transmitters as its fixed points.

This might seem like an impossible task without access to the transmitters,
but they have a workaround using the Internet as a backhaul.


Instead of transmitting their timing information like the systems mentioned above, they rely on a set of reference receivers sharing it online to the clients receiver software. So far they have a demo running in Denver
Colorado.


The interesting thing about this system is that its open-source, and requires only a relatively inexpensive software defined radio receiver and a computer
to operate. Now anyone with a group of internet-connected friends to set up reference receivers can have their own positioning system, its no longer the exclusive preserve of governments. We like this idea, and we look forward to seeing it being tested more widely.

The second session of this year's YOTA Contest, organised by the IARU R1
Youth Working Group in cooperation with the Hungarian Amateur Radio Society (MRASZ), is taking place on 19 July 10:00-22:00 UTC on the five classic bands CW and SSB.


Everyone can work everyone.

The exchange is an RS or RST report followed by the operator's age (or
average crew age for multi-operator entries) as of 1 January 2026.

Yes to close off July, there is the Islands on the Air Contest which runs

The exchange is an RS or RST report and a serial number, with stations on islands sending their IOTA reference number.

This, our 83rd annual Oceania DX Contest, offers amateurs worldwide the
chance to work sought-after DX stations across Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, and the Pacific.


Both events span 24 hours, kicking off at 06:00 UTC on Saturday and
concluding at 06:00 UTC on Sunday. The contest covers the 160 to 10-metre bands, excluding WARC bands, with the exchange consisting of a signal report and sequential serial number. Scoring is based on QSO points multiplied by
the number of different prefixes worked. A wide variety of entry categories
are available, ranging from QRP to high power, as well as dedicated plaque awards for newcomers, YLs, and youth entrants. Electronic log submission is required. Visit oceaniadxcontest.com for rules and logging information.


The SSB section will run from October 3rd to 4th, followed by the CW section from October 10th to 11th.

Because the observatorys 3200-megapixel camera, the largest digital camera

New "Midnight Runners" 12-Metre Activity Launched

Ian, EI3LH, has launched a brand-new operating initiative focused entirely on revitalizing activity on the 12-metre band around the world.


Named the "Midnight Runners," this unique challenge is dedicated strictly to
CW and SSB operations on 12 metres, a frequency span often considered a forgotten band.


The primary objective is to complete 12 contacts on 12 metres during a single operating session to earn a free membership certificate to the club.


The initiative is designed to encourage operators to get outdoors and get active, meaning the qualifying session must be conducted as part of an established field activity, such as Parks, Summits, Lighthouses, or Beaches
on the Air. However, home stations are also highly encouraged to participate
by chasing and hunting these portable operators to secure their own 12 contacts. Participants should note that casual rag chews and digital modes
like FT8 are excluded from the challenge.

From the USA. the Blackstone Valley Amateur Radio Club invites the public to discover the excitement, challenge and service of amateur radio during

a daylong demonstration at Old Slater Mill National Historic Landmark on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., rain or shine.


This event is part of this year's National Park Week celebrations in the USA.

During the program, BVARC will establish several operating stations so
visitors can observe ham radio in action. Visitors will also have the opportunity to discover the excitement of making contacts with other hams throughout the globe. Experienced BVARC operators will be available to introduce visitors to the cornucopia of amateur radio interests, including

14 MILLION 'NOGGERS' CAN'T BE WRONG.

Satellite Networked Open Ground Station (SatNOGS) is the biggest open network of satellite ground stations in the world. It is run by volunteers and
managed by the Libre Space Foundation. Essentially, it gives anyone a web interface to remotely schedule and control ground stations across the globe.


One of the most significant aspects is that it relies entirely on regular people building their own setups at home. They use cheap, easy-to-find gear like a Raspberry Pi, a simple USB radio receiver, and basic antennas. Because the software handles all the tracking automatically using orbital data, the stations tune in and catch signals the exact moment a satellite flies
overhead.


SatNOGS does more than just routine tracking. It has turned out to be an amazing tool for spotting when things go wrong in space.


Back in May, everyday users looking at SatNOGS signal charts noticed
something weird with Indias Drishti satellite. By analysing how the signal
was fading in and out, independent trackers figured out that the spacecraft
was actually tumbling in orbit at 3 degrees per second. This public data gave the world early proof that the satellite was in major trouble, months before official reports finally confirmed it was lost because of a solar storm.

The community makes public observations, waterfall charts, and transmitter details completely open to the public. Real-time tracking data, along with guides on how to build a local ground station, can be found on the official website.

Hi, Im Richard VK2SKY.

Last week, John VK4JPM spoke about the upcoming test of the new Ausalert system, and

the recent Telstra mobile phone outage that affected Triple-0 calls, train services,

and more a reminder that even in our modern connected world, communications failures can and do happen.

He also highlighted measures we can take to ensure that, when all else fails, Amateur Radio works: keeping our stations in good order, being able to run on battery power and so on.
Another tool we can employ is Winlink, an Amateur Radio messaging system that can

send email over the radio to anywhere in the world.

Local infrastructure disabled by fire, floods, or cyclones? Not a problem!
Just get

on the radio, connect to a Winlink gateway outside the affected area, and
send your

email to a fellow Winlink operator or even any internet email address.

client software is available for Windows, Linux, macOS, and the Raspberry Pi.

There are activities each week to give you practice in using Winlink, from simple

radio games like Hamword, to communications exercises like Winlink Wednesday.

Our friends at PAREDN, the Philippines counterpart to WICEN, have an
excellent

weekly activity that uses Winlink, a Winlink to SMS gateway, an APRS to SMS gateway,

and Echolink to do a voice check-in with volunteers in and around Manila.

ARRL LOOKING AFTER OUR FUTURE

ARRL The National Association for Amateur Radio in the USA has announced
that young member Ben Leovy, KC3ZPQ, of Maryland, has been named the winner
of the 2026 ARRL Student Coding Competition.


Ben, 16, designed a mobile application to help users prepare for their
amateur radio license examinations.


He will receive a $5,000 US prize awarded by ARRL.

His project was selected by a panel of judges based on usability, clarity, stability, and code quality. The judges also recognized his enthusiasm for software development and creativity by awarding him a new MacBook Neo to encourage his continued exploration of programming and technology.

VK - WIA Affiliated Clubs Presidents' Webinar 6 December (vk7tw) Submitting news items

If you would like to submit news items for possible inclusion
in the VK1WIA broadcasts, please email your item in text to nationalnews@wia.org.au and don't JUST send url's links or
posters, but take the time to pen YOUR contribution.

To submit audio, email nationalnews@wia.org.au
and send BOTH the audio and the text

We would appreciate items certainly no longer than 1.5 mts in
length as we only have a half hour.

Remember the sooner you submit material the more the
likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition of
WIA National News.

Each recorded item will only be broadcast once, if you want a couple
of mentions, please submit different slants to keep your
event 'fresh' and always if the news room is to read your
item --- write it in the 3rd person. (First if YOU are
reading your own item). If you are mentioning your own name / call
in the story, say something like "and myself, Pat, vk11abc"

A reminder when supplying HamFest info we obviously can't
plug DEALS from commercial traders "on air", but we at the
WIA will put your supporters 'goods' in this text edition
"no worries."

We will not give blatant 'plugs' to raffles, be it raffles
at the event or "on-line".

you may lodge a quick reply to let us know you read it, who
knows, you might even get a "cheerio call".

Open mail program which sends mail from the address you want
to unsubscribe from. Send unsubscribe to the list
unsubscribe address vk1wia-news-leave@lists.wia.org.au
You will be sent a confirmation mail and must follow the
instructions given in that mail to complete the
unsubscription.

Once your unsubscription has been processed, you will
probably receive a message confirming your unsubscription
from the list and at that point you should stop receiving
messages.
