• Chery E5 Test drive

From Daryl@3:633/10 to All on Saturday, April 18, 2026 18:57:17
Took one of these for an extended drive today, very well specced and the
only EV that comes with a full size spare wheel.
First impression was that it was very smooth an quiet then I turned onto
the Western Hwy and turned on the cruise control and thought that it was trying to kill us, the lane keeping assist was nuts to the point that I thought that it was dangerous so I turned it off and the car then felt okay.
I pulled off at the next exit and pulled over trying to work out how to
turn off all that nanny shit, managed to turn a lot of it off but next
time I tried to use the CC it was still all over the place.
When we got back to dealer he explained that it has a semi self driving
mode which someone had turned on, he showed me how to turn it off so
    that part was sorted.
Overall not a bad car but I could only live with it with all the nanny
shit turned off, I also didn't like the steering feel, it felt "wooden"
    with bugger all feel.
    The search continues:-)

Want to sell to mug punters, specc the car to the hilt, seems to work

Definitely a bonus but that should be the last thing you look at.

Electric cars are! What did you expect from a car with no ICE??

It will take the Chinese quite some time to perfect such simple things,
    don't hold your breath.

Then either look at cars without the shit you don't want or look at cars
where all the shit just works in a non-intrusive way.

didn't like the steering feel, it felt "wooden" with bugger all feel.

Electric steering can be vague and light. That's how my first Toyota
with EPS felt. The second was a minor improvement, the current is a
world apart. Vague steering can be tiring on long trips, ask me how I
know. Toyota seem to have it sorted now after some 15-20 years. Don't
expect the Chinese to better it in any shorter time frame.

The ES has three steering modes, dynamic, normal, and urban. I changed
from normal to urban. the steering is very light in that mode. I like it
    that way.

there is no perfect car. there will always be things to like and not to

It was till I worked out that it was best to let the car drive itself,
the sales droid was very apologetic when I complained, he said that that system is normally turned off for test drives but someone much have
turned it on without him knowing.

I'm almost to the point on giving up on a new EV or PHEV mostly because
the only ones within our budget are Chinese, the ones we have test
driven seem to be very well equipped and even the build quality seems
okay but the driving experience isn't up to what I'm used to.
Of the 2 I've driven so far the BYD is the best to drive, at least there
are plenty more models to look at, it will be my wife's car so she is
more keen than me to keep looking.

Many modern cars seem to be a very acquired taste.

Good luck with it. I imagine it can be pretty frustrating.
