  • File explorer - folder - context menu - rename "Explore" ?

    Hello all,

    [skip this if you just want to read the question]

    Just now I bumped again into how to open a new file-explorer window. I continuously forget if I should, in the folders context menu, use "open" or "explore" for that.

    So, I decided to go into the registry and rename "explore" to "open new", Which works.

    The only problem is that clicking a folder in file-explorers right-side folder-and-file list it now opens it without a folder-tree (on the left).

    (Likely reason : the OS internally expects the "Explore" key to be present).

    I reverted the change and all was back to how it worked previously.

    [question]

    Can I, in the registry, mark an "hkey_classes_root/xxx/shell/yyy" entry
    *not* to be displayed in the xxx context-menu (I know, it contradicts that entries purpose).


    The idea is that I duplicate the "explore" entry but now as "open new". The OS happy because it can stil find the "explore" entry, and me happy because
    I, in the context menu, see "open new" instead of "explore". :-)

    I skip the question and comment this. Wouldn't it be much easier
    to just make a middle click on a folder to open it in a new Tab?
    In most cases a new Tab is the better choice and if you really need
    a new window, use the mouse to move the Tab outside the explorer
    window to open a new window for this Tab.

    I use mouse button 4 to open a folder in a new Tab and make this
    Tab the active Tab and mouse button 5 to close the active Tab.
    This way a can, with only two mouse clicks, open a folder to see its content and then close it (without moving the mouse pointer to any menu entry).

    I don't know : how to you get XP's File Explorer to respond to a
    middle-click ? And to get it to have tabs ? :-)

    I see I forgot to mention that the question is for XP - and forgot that
    beyond XP the File Explorer changed. :-|

    I believe there is an XP newsgroup - there certainly used to be.
