A recent CNET article by a long time router specialist mentioned that
there is no such thing as 'a made in US router', not hardware wise and
    not firmware wise.

To add insult to injury, they are banning security updates to existing routers. Yes, that's the way to improve/maintain security! NOT!

You can re-program the routers with open source firmware.
This does not work for every device, but it you're concerned
about the lack of intelligence in the world, look for
a new router with enough RAM and flash so you can reprogram it.

If the router had a Broadcom SOC, I wouldn't be too concerned.
We've been using a steady supply of those for a lot of years.
When you track down the open source firmware for routers,
there should be some mention of who makes the SOC. The firmware
has to know the details of the SOC, to run it.

Isn't a lot of kit made in Taiwan?

As far as I know, this ban is on "any foreign country",
and the ban is on processing the item through the FCC.
You have to get some sort of approvals for things
like RF emissions (or emissions in the wrong bands).

You cannot get to the approval process, without applying
for a waiver of some sort (no one will review your gadget
without a "special" permission). Some units may still be imported
(eventually) as a result. I don't know if the process can be
appealed, can go through a court or not. Presumably the people
who cooked this up, have thought of all of this beforehand.

Whether a lot of kit is made in Taiwan or Vietnam, likely does
    not matter.

Since existing routers already have passed through the FCC process,
they are not pulling those approvals. They are not driving through
the countryside and gathering up all the existing routers
and burning them in a bonfire. It just means new models,
maybe a unit with Wifi 8 won't get past the border (because
it won't have FCC approval and the FCC won't work on it).

Once the old models are MD (manufacturer discontinued),
    then things will get interesting.

The trick is to flash these US routers with foreign spy firmware using a secured remote connection! :)

Isn't Taiwan supposed to be handed back to 'Red' China in 2049 or some

No. I think you're confusing it a bit with Hong Kong. Hong Kong was a
British colony, which the Brits had on a long term lease which ended
in 1997. (I think that's accurate.) At any rate, the Brits had to hand
it back to China in 1997, and Beijing has been tightening its grip
ever since. No such thing applies to Taiwan, but Beijing does consider
Taiwan to belong to China. The Taiwanese disagree.

and Taiwan thinks she's the *Real* China, but isn't Taiwan currently
one of the very, very few "good countries" that USAlia counts as
    friendly?

The US considers Taiwan an ally, yes.
